The racism of 'blackface' and "Tropic Thunder"

Not a son of Africa

With Barack Obama on the verge of becoming the next American President it seems that the white establishment has declared an unofficial war on all things African. The latest attack arrives in theatres this week with the new American film, "Tropic Thunder" in which a white man (Robert Downey Jr. pictured above) puts on blackface and pretends to be a son of Africa.

A white man was recently caught plotting to assassinate Senator Obama, the African mayors of Detroit and Baltimore are being harassed by the white legal system and the American entertainment system creates films such as "Tropic Thunder".

This film is also an insult since it makes light of the fact that the U.S. government forced thousands of African men to take part in its war of aggression against the people of Vietnam.

There is nothing amusing about blackface. It is a highly racist and offensive depiction of Africans. Its sole purpose is to demean us and to propagate the stereotype that Africans are on this Earth merely for the amusement and abuse of the white man.

Blackface is hilarious in my opinion. I mean y'all just need to lighten up. Chow down on some watermelon. In all honestly, I love watermelon too. We should have a watermelon luncheon. Or if you refer to yourself as African...we could have a...termite and kudu luncheon...

Okay, I get that this is a joke blog, and we're not supposed to take it seriously, and all that, but...

"There is nothing amusing about blackface. It is a highly racist and offensive depiction of Africans."

This comment of yours is really offensive to black people everywhere. What you're saying is that we are all so embarrassed about having black faces that we get offended when white people try to emulate our appearance.

You may be ashamed of your color, but I'm not.

The truth is not a joke and neither is blackface. It is racist.

That's exactly my point. Racism isn't funny, and people like you trying to make a joke out of it is just awful. I have some friends who actually have faced REAL discrimination and racism, and your pathetic attempt at humor is an insult to them.

I can't believe you would even mention blackface in polite company - the very mention of it is racist you vile man.

If you're complaing about Robert Downey Jr's "blackface" role in this movie... you are a freaking idiot. You're no better than a wack-job conspircay theorist only difference is that you have the black issue on your side. This movie is not racist, it's something people in the know like to call, satire. Get off your self-righteous soap box and start working on issues that are truly important to the black community. Tell Farrakhan I said hi.

ok so blackface is "racist" in YOUR opinion BUT how about when two black men the Wayans, played white girls on white chicks, I didn't hear any complaints then. Was that the black man keeping the white man down? SATIRE people.

We gotta stop being so GOTDAMN sensitive! I'm neither Black or White But I do believe this is funny and I don't see anything racist about this movie or white chicks. To me it's in the same category, it's called COMEDY!

I work with two black dudes that think this is funny and they don't see anything racist about it.

Of course Tropic thunder is playing into stereotypes. But racist? That is a very powerful word. Just as Dave Chapelle and Eddie murphy's cameos of dressing up like whites and jews were not seen as racist but mere comedy. The reason why this movie will be successful is that the there is a big enough audience of people including blacks that will simply laugh at this movie and at most debate on whether Robert Downey Jr did a good job at portraying a Vietnam era black man. They won't be offended by it. But there are some (black and white) like Truth First who are much more sensitive and will be offended by it. It is their right to be. Not because society owes anything to Truth First, nor because the "white-society" (as he puts it) is out to make a mockery of blacks, but because he is a free thinking individual and has the right to feel how he wants to. Should he declare the sky to actually be orange and not blue, most won't agree with him, but he can say and think it.

As a foreigner who has lived in the USA for almost 10 years I will say that Americans in general and therefor African Americans included are a spoiled people. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy USA and Americans very much but most seem to think that life or the government owes each individual a life where everyone should only have to overcome the same amount of equally difficult problems. I don't feel sorry for any american. Blacks included. Yes there is a terrible history of how the majority of blacks came to be Americans. But today in the 21st century as citizens of America, any man no matter who they are can fulfill his dreams. Some may have to work harder or overcome different challenges than others to achieve those dreams, but it can happen. You can count on one hand how many countries there are like that in the world.

It is also beyond me why Truth First would even give a stupid hollywood movie so much power over himself. But I realize that people like Truth First are negatively thinking. Here the democratic presidential candidate is a (very worthy) black man who has a very good chance of winning. And a majority amount of the votes that got him there were from whites... and yet, Truth First scours the internet to find a story of one stupid racist white man to plaster on his page citing how racist the entire white population is. He thinks he is fighting a battle on racism when in reality he relies on that battle and actually fuels it. Truth First has more in common than he knows with the crazy white racist he cited. Good luck with your hate Mr. Truth. It is your and only your fault if you let others bring you down. I would suggest to you Mr. Truth First to follow one stereotype about blacks and that is to stop whining and grow some fucking big ass balls.

Yes, I'm afraid it is a joke blog, but even though we mostly just post satire on here, we still enjoy well thought out and carefully articulated responses; it's sad how often the morons overrun the place with pathetically stupid and irrational responses.

We surely do appreciate responses like yours!

well, except for the last line. That was a bit over the top.

I'm Black and I saw Tropic Thunder and I thought it was one of the funniest movies ever. It wasn't racist at all. I mean if they had a white man playing a black role then yeah that would bother me but this role was written for a white man trying to further his acting abilities by playing another race. People don't seem to understand that. And plus everybody in the movie is ragging on the dude for putting on a blackface. There's nothing racist about it. Some people just like to jump to conclusions. This movie is a movie about making fun of actors not black people. Everybody in this movie looks stupid, including the white people, and I think every race will enjoy it.

The white man plotting to assassinate Barack Obama also said he wanted to "put a bullet in the head of" George Bush.

Just to the Obama-lovers in the media desperate for his victory, it is more newsworthy to threaten assassinate a done-nothing, achieved-nothing senator "if he get's elected" than a two term President.

Blackface done by white people is ALWAYS racist, it was originally meant to PERSECUTE African-Americans.
And when it is done TODAY, it conjures up memories of it's original intent.
What about Dave Chappelle, and the movie White Chicks? Lets face it, whiteface does NOT equal blackface, they have two different histories. And whats worse, this film will likely invite MORE whites to do blackface, such as throw more racist blackface frat parties etc.
If someone made a film that tried to find humor about the Jewish suffering in the concentration camps, heads would roll, yet Hollyweird found nothing wrong with trying to have fun with the suffering of Black Americans.
Blackface's sole purpose was/is to persecute, demonize, dehumanize Black people, and that is no laughing matter.

WTF are you talking about? This movie doesn't even bring up slavery or anything. This movie wasn't made to offend or degrade black people and honestly I think Robert Downey Jr.'s performance was hilarious and in no way offensive. I'm tired of Black people bringing up our past struggles and putting them in the present. Yes our ANCESTORS went through a lot and we should respect them and admire them and remember them but have our focus on the future. Maybe Blackface long ago was meant to persecute Blacks but today it's not, get over it you weren't even there. I don't even consider it Blackface. Black people have been dressing up as white people and white people laugh. We're supposed to be EQUALS right? So why the fuck can't they do the same if its all in good fun and nobody is doing anything offensive like in this movie? I don't believe in that double standard it just makes Black people look bad.

TruthFirst, stop posting anonymous comments back to yourself to make it look like there's someone who supports your viewpoint.

Shut up, white clown. Keep tellin' it like it is, my brother!

First of all nothing in his performance was derogatory or demeaning. Secondly you should criticize the true black man for taking a role that only furthered a stereotype.

Last have you ever seen "White Chicks"? No one was crying when the Wayans portrayed stuck up white girls.

Are blacks incapable of being racist?
